The 5 Elements
The Five Elements acupuncture approach underpins the whole of Chinese Medicine, and it is this Five Elements approach that fundamentally challenges western medicine, and individuals alike. Chinese medicine has grown in popularity and is more widely accepted in western medical institutes, the awareness for this healing system is continually growing and challenging the western boundaries. The system of Five Element Acupuncture works on core fundamentals, to restore balance, the aim is to restore harmony or the balance of ‘Qi’ (internal energy). This energy can become unbalanced on a mind, body or spirit level. Challenges of daily life and the environment can impact the energy and eventually create blockages that can manifest into certain conditions. The Five Elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. These elements have a relationship with the twelve officials. The officials are in main, the internal organs of our body. ‘It was said that this led ancient wise people to investigate the nature of this shared ground, and they found the five categories or base energies in which we can observe and experience our universe. Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood also known as the five elements.’ (Herman, 2000, p14)
